Bushfire situation is still out of control
Better weather conditions give the fire brigade in Australia a much-needed respite. But the authorities warn that the fires could continue for weeks. Anger and despair are growing in the country.
Eddies of fire, like flaming wind trousers, dance over burning grass and pasture land, behind it the conflagration rages - a fleeing resident put the recordings online a few days ago. Even if the hot winds and therefore the fire conditions decreased somewhat last night - the apocalypse to which the bushfire season in Australia has developed is far from over.
"There are fires all over the country. We will see them continue to flare up, they will continue to increase," warned Prime Minister of Southeastern Victoria, David Andrews, even if it rains in Melbourne and the weather conditions will improve next week. The fire season has started earlier than ever and will continue for many weeks.
Sydney government's plan of increasing water supply
Super dry season in Sydney caused a very low level of water stock. Now all the city dams are full only by 40%. And there is a limitation of using water for every Sydney resident. Soon these limitations are going to be stricter. The introduction of water restrictions at this time means that the state government decided to go earlier than expected. But this step is seen as a response to the ongoing drought.
The government has already tried to raise water levels in Sydney this year. It turned on a city desalination plant in Kurnell when dam levels reached 60% in January. The latest water restrictions were lifted in Sydney in 2009.
But the NSW government is planning to double the water level in Kurnell. As this dam can supply only 15% of water to Sydney residents now.
