Maintenance problem of Queensland roads
The poor condition of roads has increased costs to communities and the freight industry by increasing travel times, creating safety risks, and reducing network resilience. The network in Queensland comprises about 5000 kilometers of roads and 940 bridges that bear almost half of the state's traffic. Infrastructure, Australia's executive director of policy and research, said road maintenance was critical to Australia's future. That number is expected to increase to $9 billion over the next few years. We need to see an additional focus on road maintenance in that state, which is traditionally the domain of state and local governments."
The state government has already listed about 885 kilometers of the network as a high priority for maintenance and rehabilitation, of which about 340 kilometers "urgently" need repairs, and 546 kilometers need improvement. The Queensland government expects the cost of addressing these issues to rise significantly if they are not treated now.
