Meteorologists believe that the inhabitants of Australia should prepare for the upcoming numerous temperature records. So far, the hottest day in Sydney's history was January 7, 2013: 45.8 degrees.
Records at Sydney Hill Observatory Meteorological Station have been maintained since 1858. Most of the country's weather records have been set in the last decade. In November, the temperature record for the whole of Australia was also broken: an average of 40.3 . Just to the states and territories, 70% of Australia suffered from extreme heat due to the flow of hot air that was kept above the center of the country.
One of the factors of abnormal heat is a weather phenomenon known as the Indian Ocean dipole. The dipole creates a lower than average sea surface temperature of the Indonesian islands. Companies like Facebook and Twitter are unable to control automated bots and other means of manipulation on their platforms. According to a recent report released by researchers at NATO Strategic Communications Center of Excellence, these companies’ incompetence has made it possible for the mischievous people to find ways to increase likes, comments, and clicks. In last December, Europe’s top antitrust enforcer Margrethe Vestager posted “A very #MerryChristmas to all,” on Facebook. It got around 144 likes. A few months later, to see how easy it is to get likes, researchers paid a company a few dollars to attract attention to her well wishes. Within 30 minutes, the post got 100 more likes. They found similar results on Vestager’s Instagram account and a tweet by Vera Jourova, who is the European Union’s justice commissioner for Christmas. The researchers found out that fake clicks have less than 20% drop rate. That means around 80% of the likes, clicks, views, etc. will remain. The report mentioned that these companies are trying to combat disinformation and manipulation, but they also overlook the vulnerabilities in their system.
