The winner of the 20th Thiess International River prize was announced in the evening on Tuesday at the international river symposium in Brisbane. The award was announced by The International River Foundation, and the winner of the prize was the James River of Virginia. The James river won a prize of 200,000 Australian Dollars.
The James River Association (JRA) is a non-profit organization supported by its members. The association serves as the guardian and voice of James River. James River was deemed as one of the most polluted rivers in the USA when JRA was founded in 1976. However, now, it is often regarded as the healthiest tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. The CEO of the International River foundation Eva Abal said that the remarkable improvement in the condition of the river as a result of an inclusive approach by JRA. They increased public awareness as well as made various public and private investments in the river.
